The evidence table, explorer and exported rows share these records. Narrative examples retain their stated dates and assumptions. Coverage is limited to the listed providers and scope; no local quote or national average is implied.
A carpet-cleaning headline price is not the visit total. Carpet Transformers in Atlanta lists $47 per room up to 250 sq ft and a $130 service minimum. EK Carpet Cleaning in Chicago lists $48 for a room up to 150 sq ft and a $110 minimum. The nearly equal room prices cover different room sizes; neither is a national average.

A package and an a la carte subtotal are not interchangeable. The Atlanta $219 three-room package has additional scope; three $47 room items total $141 before anything else. Ask whether a quoted package replaces or supplements individual room charges. Do not add a package to the same rooms again.
Measure rooms before counting them
Length x width gives rectangular floor area. A 12 x 12 ft room is 144 sq ft; a 16 x 14 ft room is 224 sq ft. Under the two menus above, the larger room remains inside Atlanta’s 250 sq ft cap but falls into Chicago’s listed large-room tier. Open-plan living/dining space may count as more than one room or use area pricing.

Measure separate sections of L-shaped areas and add them. Record closets, landings and stairs independently. Ask whether the provider charges the whole floor area or only the accessible carpet around furniture. These definitions can matter more than a $1 difference in the advertised room rate.
How the minimum changes a small job
| Illustrative job using a public menu | Item subtotal | Base visit amount |
|---|---|---|
| Atlanta: two eligible rooms | 2 x $47 = $94 | $130 minimum, not $94 + $130 |
| Atlanta: three eligible rooms, no extras | 3 x $47 = $141 | $141 before applicable fees/tax |
| Chicago: two standard rooms | 2 x $48 = $96 | $110 minimum |
| Chicago: three standard rooms plus eligible hall | 3 x $48 + $24 = $168 | $168 before applicable extras/tax |
The base rule is max(service minimum, eligible item subtotal), where the menu defines the minimum as a floor. Confirm whether treatments qualify toward that floor. A standalone call-out fee would be different and must be stated separately.
Treatment, furniture and drying are separate decisions
Describe stains before asking for a total. A routine cleaning, enzyme overspray and treatment reaching padding or subfloor are different scopes. The Atlanta page prices severe odor onsite; a listed per-room enzyme fee cannot establish the total for that work. Ask whether stain removal is a process or a guaranteed result and what happens if the stain cannot be removed.
List furniture you want moved rather than assuming the crew will clear every room. Chicago’s page excludes moving heavy items. Identify delicate fibers and area rugs: a loose wool rug is not automatically priced or treated like installed synthetic carpet.
Ask the technician for drying time under your home’s ventilation, heating and humidity conditions, when furniture can return and whether protective tabs should stay in place. Schedule enough time before a move-out inspection; do not promise a universal drying duration.

Same-job quote worksheet
- Room dimensions and chargeable room count
- Room size cap / open-plan rule
- Hall / stairs / landings
- Carpet material / area rugs
- Stain treatment and guarantee limits
- Furniture moving and drying plan
For a fair comparison, both providers need the same measured room list, material, staining and furniture instructions. Separate required treatment from optional deodorizer or protector. Have the revised total approved before extra work, not after the equipment is already inside.
Common pricing questions
Is a $47 room cheaper than a $48 room?
Not enough information. The room caps, minimum, included pretreatment and add-ons differ. Price the entire identical job; these providers also operate in different cities, so this is not a local shopping ranking.
Should I choose square-foot pricing?
Only after checking that it applies to your residential job. EK lists its area tiers for open space/commercial work; do not silently substitute them for a furnished bedroom.
Can I save by adding a room?
Sometimes the minimum already covers a small subtotal. In the Chicago arithmetic, two rooms cost $110 and three cost $144, so the incremental base cost is $34, not the full $48. This does not make the extra room free.
Sources and editorial method
Provider-owned price pages are linked next to their entries. CostFAQ checked the pages on the observation date but did not purchase services. Calculations are labeled examples, exclude unspecified tax and are not evidence of actual customer payments. The sample is too small and geographically mixed for a national-average claim.
Revision note: the earlier broad range is replaced by room caps, service floors, two identifiable local menus and an explicit same-job method. Editorial policy.
